Čurug in the heart of Vojvodina. At a time when more and more tourists are seeking authentic experiences away from city crowds, the village of Čurug, located in the heart of Bačka, becomes a real destination for nature lovers, cultural heritage enthusiasts, and rural tourism fans. With its rich history, fertile fields, the Tisa River, and hospitable locals, Čurug offers much more than meets the eye.

Čurug is located in the Žabalj municipality, in the South Bačka District, only about 30 kilometers from Novi Sad, making it easily accessible for day trips and weekend getaways. The proximity to the Tisa River gives this place a special charm, and it is surrounded by typical Vojvodina landscapes – endless plains, pastures, and fields.

The Tisa River offers numerous opportunities for eco-tourism and nautical tourism – boating, fishing, birdwatching, and summer refreshment along its banks. The area around the Tisa is rich in flora and fauna, making it ideal for photographers and nature lovers. Nearby is the Jegrička Special Nature Reserve, known for its wetlands, diverse birdlife, and endemic species. This area is perfect for birdwatching and walks along well-maintained trails in untouched nature.

Čurug is known for its long history, dating back to the Middle Ages, as well as for significant monuments from more recent times. Highlights include:

• The Orthodox Church of Saint Archangel Gabriel – an impressive building constructed in 1805, one of the largest churches in this part of Vojvodina.

• Monument to the victims of World War II – commemorating the suffering and history of the region.

• Ethno-houses and farms – increasingly becoming part of rural tourism offerings, where visitors can experience traditional life, local cuisine, and handicrafts.

Potential for wine and gastro tourism

Vojvodina, including Čurug, is increasingly recognized as a region with diverse gastronomic offerings. Local dishes, farm products, homemade brandies, and wines attract visitors. By introducing events like local food days, rakija festivals, or farm wine tastings, Čurug could become an important point on Serbia’s gastro-tourism map. Local customs and events preserve community spirit, including:

• Čurug Fair – a traditional fair with a long history, bringing people from across the region.

• Ethno-events – showcasing local customs, costumes, and music.

• Sports and fishing events – especially on the Tisa, where fishing competitions are organized.

In the surroundings of Čurug, more registered rural households offer an authentic Vojvodina village experience: overnight stays in ethno-settings, home-cooked meals, tractor rides, fruit and vegetable picking, weaving workshops, ajvar-making, etc. This sustainable tourism model can be key to village development and retaining young people in rural areas.

Čurug has all the prerequisites to become an important rural-tourism destination – rich nature, interesting history, authentic customs, and increasing interest from people wanting to revitalize the local community through tourism. Investments in infrastructure, promotion, and support for local initiatives could make this hidden gem of Vojvodina more visible to domestic and foreign tourists.

Summer in Šid: Where art, history, and wine speak the same language. Imagine an evening on a hot July day. The main street of Šid turns into a promenade, filled with music, fashion, and smiles. The Šid Cultural Summer begins, and for a month and a half, this town in Srem becomes a stage under the starry sky. While streets were once named after emperors and kings, here the Main Street has always been and will remain the heart of Šid. But this is just the beginning.

Sava Šumanović Gallery: The Light of Art

Šid is home to one of the most important Serbian painters – Sava Šumanović. His gallery is located in the family house and houses over 400 works of this brilliant artist. Peace, silence, and light here are not just part of the paintings but part of the atmosphere. Nearby is the naive art gallery “Ilijanum,” a gem of authentic expression in everyday life.

Ilija Bašičević Bosilj, the founder and creator, transformed his mystical worlds into art that invites you to forget the boundaries of reality.

Orthodox Treasury and Saint Nicholas Church

An 18th-century church with a Baroque interior and iconostasis by painter Grigorije Nikolić, it is not just a place of worship but a treasury of spiritual and cultural heritage. Since 2006, part of Prince Lazar’s relics is kept in the church, and in 2016, the church treasury opened with over 120 sacred items.

Sremski Front: The Quiet Power of Memory

Near the village of Adaševci, on the left bank of the Bosut, stands the “Sremski Front” memorial complex – a witness to one of the hardest battles of World War II. The horticultural, museological, and artistic space honors innocent young lives, with works by Soldatović and Krstonošić leaving a strong impression.

VU Morović: Where Silence is Luxury

The former residence of Josip Broz Tito, Villa “Srna,” is now part of a tourist complex open to the public. The fenced hunting ground “Nepričava,” with deer, does, and wild boars, offers a true escape from everyday life. In addition, the fishing paradise – Brek canal – provides memorable tranquility.

Ethno Village Gagijevo Sedlo and Villa Sunce

Choose accommodation to your taste: the rural charm of the farm “Gagijevo Sedlo,” lovingly built by returnees from abroad, or the comfort of the urban villa “Sunce” overlooking the Bosut. In Morović, everyone finds their peace.

3 x 3: The Magical Matrix of Šid

Three rivers (Bosut, Studva, Danube), three lakes (Moharač, Bruje, Sot), three monasteries (Privina Glava, Đipša, Kuveždin) – Šid in numbers tells its tale. Privina Glava, in particular, takes your breath away – a complex monastery with nine buildings, legends about founder Priva, and the Munich Psalter that was once kept here. Moharač Lake: The Lake of Two Halves. The 70-hectare Moharač Lake is a paradise for anglers and swimmers. Located in Fruška Gora National Park, this lake has a unique fate – it is owned by two private owners. While laws state water cannot be private, reality sometimes swims outside the law.

Wine: The Golden Glass of Srem

In Erdevik, viticulture has a tradition of over 2,000 years. The winery “Erdevik” offers premium wines – Trianon, Roze Nostra, Tri Roze Koze – made in land rich with fossils of the ancient Pannonian Sea. For those seeking a more natural approach, McC Wines offers a biodynamic experience, led by former MI6 agent Don McCulloch.

Why Visit Šid?

Because everything here has a soul: stone and water, clock and canvas. This Srem town does not only sell tourism but an experience. Whether you love art, history, nature, wine, or simply peace – Šid will gladly open its doors to you.
